Position Overview 

IOF is seeking a Managing Director, Strategy and Operations, to help lead and direct overall strategy and operations for IOF. The Managing Director, Strategy and Operations is a dynamic role serving as part of the IOF senior leadership to advance IOF’s objectives. This individual will be a trusted advisor to the Executive Director and strong people leader.  The Managing Director, Strategy and Operations works closely with the Executive Director to define and execute organizational strategies and build IOF’s organizational culture. They oversee the grantmaking, operations, and fundraising teams, and are responsible for oversight of the budget, RF Catalytic Capital relationship, staff development, grants management, talent management and acquisition, facilities, procurement, and technology.

The Managing Director, Strategy and Operations, is, when necessary, a delegate for the Executive Director in internal and external settings. The Managing Director, Strategy and Operations ensures work is effectively serving IOF’s overall mission and goals, works to ensure the staff team are working together to maximize IOF’s ability to implement federal funding on behalf of fighting climate change and winning economic justice for workers and communities.

Pay Range  

$154,170 to $235,500. This represents the present low and high end of RFCC’s pay range for this position. Actual pay will vary based on various factors, including but not limited to experience.

Duty Station & Work Schedule  

Applicants for this role will be considered for remote work or, for applicants based in Washington, D.C. on a hybrid work schedule, and required to be in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

 Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and oversee strategy for work and projects that have the biggest impact on the organizational agenda and lead to successful execution of IOF’s mission. In collaboration with the Executive Director and Managing Director, Programs, run IOF’s Strategic Planning processes and facilitate decision making by posing essential questions to guide the development of strategy and advancement of goals.
  • Direct and design internal alignment and integration strategies across IOF. This includes collaborating with and empowering each team to deliver on IOF goals, identifying strategic connection opportunities and designing collaborative projects.
  • Ensure strategies and plans are meeting IOF’s overall mission and goals. Work with staff to provide regular updates on measurable progress, including development of IOF’s 6-month Reports to Funders.
  • Direct staff performance, growth, and development activities, including designing and overseeing a regular performance review process enterprise wide.
  • Supervise the Operations, Grant Making, Aligned Funders, Fundraising, and Administrative teams, including oversight of strong budgeting and grantmaking systems.
  • Oversee IOF’s relationship with RF Catalytic Capital, including business process and strategy reviews, human resources, procurement, and finance.
  • Oversee the recruitment and development of talent for IOF.
  • Represent IOF as required, both internally and externally, serving as a senior ambassador and representative of the organization, including as a proxy for the Executive Director, as required.
  • Oversee the preparation and follow-up for IOF’s Management Committee and Aligned Funder meetings, including participation with or on behalf of the Executive Director when required, in collaboration with appropriate staff.
  • Mitigate risk to IOF, including legal and business risk analysis, long-term planning for IOF’s future state, and ensuring IOF has the resources and foundation to succeed as its mission evolves.

Education, Experience, and Skills 

  • Minimum of 12 years of relevant experience in government, organizing, advocacy, policy and/or campaigns leading strategic and operational teams.
  • Expertise in process design and management, organizational transformation, and systems management.
  • Experience working at the innovative frontier of a field, preferably related to climate issues.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification/experience demonstrating the ability to learn quickly and work in a disciplined way to produce high quality knowledge products.
  • Proven management experience with a demonstrated ability to lead, inspire, and nurture a team.
  • Ability to navigate complexity with a strategic and analytic lens.
  • Highly organized with the ability to wear multiple hats in a dynamic, fast-moving environment; a solution-oriented team player who manages toward clarity.
  • Problem-solver with the ability to engage others and leverage relevant expertise within IOF.
  • Recognizes the value of different perspectives and commits to inclusion, equity, and diversity in every aspect of work.

Travel Requirements 

This position will be required to travel up to 25% of the time.

Position Overview

The Managing Director, Regional Programs works with the executive management team to develop and implement state and regional strategies across IOF’s four pillars. They collaborate closely with the Executive Director to assure that IOF’s grantmaking strategies in states meet IOF’s overall program goals. They consult with other staff, outside experts, regional foundations, and organizational partners to understand state landscapes and assess capacity and funding gaps. The Managing Director of Regional Programs functions as a strategic leader, convenor, grant-maker, and thought partner.

The Managing Director of Regional Programs oversees a regional team that researches and identifies potential grantees in states, engages with grantees and other stakeholders to shape proposed areas of work, coordinates across IOF strategies within states, and coordinates with the IOF operations team on grant execution.

Pay Range

$166,100 to $213,444. This represents the present low and high end of RFCC’s pay range for this position. Actual pay will vary based on various factors, including but not limited to experience.

  • Leads the design, development and execution of state and local strategies and priorities, in collaboration with IOF leadership and colleagues.
  • Oversees the implementation of IOF grants at the state level to accelerate the transition to a clean energy economy in IOF’s priority states, with a strong focus on place-based grassroots activity and communications. Works with team to identify new partners, capacity gaps and emerging opportunities.
  • Manages a regional staff team, who oversee the day-to-day activities related to priority state needs assessment and state-based grantee relationships.
  • Manages consultants charged with helping assess state capacity needs. Engages directly with state-level partners and grantees around IOF’s strategic priorities.
  • Coordinates closely with state-based organizations that have similar clean energy implementation goals to IOF to ensure strategies are complementary and aligned.
  • Builds strong relationships with external experts to inform state and local priorities and grant-making.
  • Represents IOF with state-level stakeholders, grantees, and current and prospective donors to advance IOF’s mission through thoughtful collaboration, strategic engagement, and fundraising.
  • Builds and manages a set of state-level programs to provide nimble and targeted capacity to eligible entities in need of support to be able to access federal funding for clean energy projects.
  • Creates and maintains a culture of transparency, collaboration, and support among colleagues, and embraces a culture of inclusivity, belonging, and diverse perspectives.
  • Expands IOF’s network of state-level validators, decision-makers, and institutional leaders while building IOF’s reputation.

Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Bachelors required; Masters preferred.
  • Expected to have a minimum of 12 years of relevant experience in organizing, advocacy, policy and/or campaigns.
  • Strong experience working with non-profits, governments, philanthropy, and relevant stakeholder groups to advance organizational priorities.
  • Proven management experience with a demonstrated ability to lead, inspire, and nurture a team.
